August 29, 2025 Thousands of families are preparing for the return to school, facing a sustained increase in the cost of school supplies that has accumulated a rise of around 35% between 2023 and 2025. According to an analysis by the Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism in Small of Mexico City (Canacope CDMX), inflationary pressure on items such as paper, backpacks, and uniforms generated an average increase of 18% in school supply lists for 2025 compared to the previous year.
Canacope CDMX estimates a total economic impact of 15.8 billion pesos in Mexico City for this back-to-school season, representing a 7.5% increase from the previous year, driven mainly by the price increase. Of this total, approximately 14.95 billion pesos are expected to be concentrated in businesses such as stationery stores, markets, shoe stores, and uniform shops. The average spending per child, including supplies, uniforms, footwear, and other items, could reach up to 8,900 pesos.
